More About the Subject of these Paintings

Cuenca is known for its rivers that crisscross the city bringing water and life. El Barranco along the banks of the Tomebamba is planted with native plants and serves as a retreat and walking path through the city. The stairs leading to the river and the buildings flanking them play an active role in urban life.

The diptych capturing La Escalinata Juana de Oro and El Puente Vivas Nos Queremos presents a study in contrast between the dense built environment of the hillside and the lush retreat of the river banks. The juxtaposition speaks to the relationship and inherent tension between the built and natural environment.
