More About the Subject of these Paintings

The house which can be visited today, was built at the end of the 19th century by Don Carlos Calderón, who bought the land as a summer residence. The Nazarí Courtyard just off the entry was built by the Duke of the Infantado in 1944 with a central pool, horseshoe arches, tile decorations, and the Grotto built into the wall.

One of the most striking features of the gardens, the pond and its islands may appear to be a natural and intimate lake, but it is actually a large man made reservoir and genius piece of garden infrastructure holding a huge amount of water that produces pressure within a vast system of irrigation lines and fountains. The Romantic castle folly on the island is representative of the influence of English gardens.

Moorish perfume gardens are traditional, enclosed, and highly sensory spaces rooted in North African and Andalusian history, designed to provide a "paradise on earth" through the combination of fragrant plants, shade, and the sound of water. These gardens, often referred to as riads or arsat, are characterized by their focus on aromatic flora such as orange blossoms, roses, jasmine, and herbs.
